Abstract
Until King Alfonso I the Battler conquered the Saragossa "taifa" at the beginning of the XII century, population organisation in the districts of the mid and lower valley of the River Aragon was clearly hindered by the borderline status which these lands maintained over the first mediaeval centuries. It is not unthinkable to suggest, however, that this situation was not only the result of holding a borderline position in what was practically permanent conflict, but also, at least on occasions, the result of an express policy of the Pamplona monarch.
