Abstract

The most significant of all writings dealing with the figure of Saint Francis Xavier, are precisely those drafted by his own hand, his letters. 138 scripts by the Saint have been conserved to the present day. If the 89 manuscripts which have been lost, but whose existence we have testimony to, are added to this sum, then we reach a total of 227 texts, 108 of which were letters. His writings, however, being considered relics, were subdivided and disfigured. Despite this dismembering, the lack of original copies and the transformation and alteration of many of those scripts that do survive, Francis Xavier’s writings remain unique, unrepeatable and extremely valuable documents, loyal and true testimony to his enthralling life.
