Abstract

In the Navarran locality of Sartaguda, in the South west of the province on the banks of the River Ebro, which constitutes the border with La Rioja, the suffix -ijo is still used today as an intentional and productive diminutive, particularly when following a lexical base finishing in -ñ, -ll or -y. This phenomenon is of great philological interest given the marked scarcity of bibliographical testimony of this diminutive in Spanish history. The abundance of place toponyms finishing in -ijo in La Rioja demonstrates that the suffix was widely used in the area at a popular level.
