El licenciado Joan de Nantes, abad de Aldaba (1595-1636) [Licentiate Joan of Nantes, abbot of Aldaba (1595-1636)]
Abstract
The objective of this paper is to introduce the figure of abbot Joan of Nantes, who governed the parish of Aldaba (Iza) for forty years during the first half of the 17th century, following a long period of disputes over his appointment. It also covers other aspects related to the character and the social life of this small village in the Pamplona Basin, such as the mandates recorded in the building ledger, customs of the parishioners, and the use of the Basque language in the locality. It also touches on the most common ways the villagers obtained credit, as well as the wealth accumulated by the abbot.
