Abstract

Until the XIXth century, the attention to people with intellectual disability has evolved from patterns of exclusion and ignorance to charity and protection approaches. The medical and educational advances, in a complex process of cultural and normative changes, have pushed forward the current rights and quality of life approaches. The reflection of this evolution in the employment of the intellectually handicapped people in the last fifty years in Navarre allows us to appreciate the cultural change that the work integration has entailed. This situation has been achieved through the combined efforts of the intellectually handicapped people, their families, the experts of the sector, and also the support given by both the Administration and society in general.
