Abstract

This study analyzes the lexicographic metalanguage used by Jose Maria Iribarren to show discourse functions of the particles found in his Vocabulario navarro. Several researchers have suggested that difficulties in defining discourse particles are derived both from its pragmatic meaning at various levels (informative, argumentative or modal) and from its discursive multi-functionality. From a theoretical and descriptive point of view there are abundant studies that have analyzed these difficulties and have offered proposals for suitable definition in dictionaries. Considering both types of studies, this paper approaches the definition of discourse particles carried out by Iribarren, who described in his Vocabulario navarro their functions in a way similar to those proposals of current lexicographic practice.
