Abstract

Latin Hispanic-Visigothic and Merovingian authors did not describe the Wascons´ land as a country with well-defined frontiers and internal demarcations. That territory was constituted neither as a unitary space nor did its rulers, so-called seniores, have a coordinated behaviour. In fact, the preserved notices are sequential, because they refer to war events that took place in precise geographic areas. Therefore, the identification of Wascons and the delimitation of Vasconia by their adversaries were circumstantial, because they responded in each occasion to the particular political position of local aristocracies, of loyalty as well as unconcern, before the nearby Germanic kingdoms.
