Abstract

This paper highlights certain aspects of the personality of Queen Isabella and defines the relevant stages of her reign, referring to her relations with the Kingdom of Navarre. Depictions of her and her manly and feminine traits, jealous nature, cultural patronage and Christian spiritual life are all reviewed. The author indicates six stages in the reign of Isabella: the political and social revolution until she was proclaimed Queen; her quest for control of the Iberian peninsula; the formation of the modern state with religious unity (Inquisition) and ecclesiastical reform; the conquest of Granada; the expulsion of the Jews and Muslims; and the outcome of this.
