Abstract

In this article, Tarsicio de Azcona provides a biographical outline of Fr. Fernando de Talavera, monk of the Order of Saint Jerome. Before becoming a Hieronymite monk and Prior of the monastery of Prado (Valladolid), Fr. Fernando studied in Salamanca (1444-1451) and was ordained a priest. While in Prado, Queen Isabella appointed him confessor and counsellor, meaning that he was privy to the most delicate affairs of her reign. In 1485, he was appointed Bishop of Avila and in 1493, Archbishop of Granada, where he laid plans for the conversion of Muslims, Jews and renegades through the scriptures, without resorting to coercion.
