De Nueva España a Navarra: el mayorazgo y la casa principal de José García de Salcedo en Milagro [From New Spain to Navarre: The mayorazgo and the main house of José García de Salcedo in Milagro]
Abstract
The house of the García de Salcedo in Milagro is one of the most outstanding examples of Baroque palace architecture in Navarra. It was built in 1680 by the soldier José García de Salcedo, as an image of his lineage and as an indisputable symbol of his economic and social power, after returning from New Viscay, where he served as Gobernor between 1671 and 1676. This article analyzes not only his vital trajectory and his family history, but also the building process by the famous master builder Pedro de Aguirre. It is completed with a study of its stylistic features and its interior decoration, in which furniture and silver objects from New Spain are detected.
