Borbones contra Borbones: el frente pirenaico durante la guerra de la Cuádruple Alianza (1719) [Bourbons vs. Bourbons: the Pyrenean front in the War of the Quadruple Alliance (1719)]
Abstract
In the War of the Quadruple Alliance (1717-1720), Spain faced all the great European powers. Despite their dynastic bond, France sided with the other powers against Spain and an army under the Duke of Berwick invaded the Pyrenean border. The problems of Philip V with his uncle, the Duke of Orleans, regent of France after the death of Louis XIV, led to the struggle between the two Bourbon kingdoms. The French invasion threatened the Spanish control over the border regions with uprisings in Catalonia and the Basque Provinces. However, most of the population, including the Kingdom of Navarre, stayed loyal.
