Influencias mediterráneas en el patrimonio artístico medieval de las órdenes militares navarras: una primera aproximación [Mediterranean influences on the medieval artistic heritage of the Navarrese military orders: a first approach]
Abstract
The Navarrese Templar and Hospitaller commandries fused the principles of the monastic architecture (Cistercian aesthetic) with the features of military architecture. All of these architectural complexes have absorbed in their different formations cultural influences from their immediate (regional) artistic environment, but also through other channels (via the Way of Saint James). However, as a result of scholarly exchange and research collaboration with other international specialists, it has also been possible to observe some specific artistic interrelationships between the Navarrese models and those of other Hispanic (Aragon, Castile, and Portugal) and Mediterranean areas (Southern France, Italy, Israel, Syria and Cyprus). For all these reasons, the author has analysed in this article different artistic interrelationships between the Navarrese models and those of other Mediterranean territories. It is envisaged that as a result of this preliminary research, various academic publications will be written in the future.
