Abstract
Fruit of his experience as an archivist and with a good knowledge of the inquisitorial collections dispersed in archives and libraries throughout the world, Gustav Henningsen produced a masterful text for a volume which he edited with John Tedeschi and Charles Amiel on sources and methods for the study of the inquisition in modern Europe. In it, he addresses two issues preliminary to any research: the heuristics of documentary sources and inquisitorial historiography. This study and the opening chapters of History of the Inquisition in Spain and America, edited by Joaquin Perez Villanueva (1984 v. 1, part 1.ª, chap. 1-3, pp. 3-176), are the two basic manuals available to researchers to navigate the inquisitorial documentary sea.
