Abstract

How could a natural son of the Navarrese Prince Carlos of Viana become master of the order of Montesa? This article follows the life of Philip of Aragon through all its vicissitudes from his birth in Pamplona, his times in Barcelona, how his grandfather John II controlled his life and how he was anomalously appointed master of the military order of Montesa as a result of the direct intervention of his uncle the Catholic King, through to his participation and death in the war of Granada. All within the context of a history of lineages in the Hispanic kingdoms and possible impact on their claims to the thrones of Navarre and Aragon.
